Bitumen Upgrader and Field Expansion Phase Two, Kearl Oil Sands

Firebag Technical Solutions provided Project Management services for SAGD utilities upgrading of Kearl Oil Sands, Canada, phase two expansion project. Phase one of the project achieved 110,000 barrels per day of bitumen. Phase two of the project added a second upgrader plant to increase the filed production to 350,000 barrels per day.

Two processing units were constructed for the project, a central processing unit and a fractional distillation unit. Each unit a combined an extensive improvement to the field utilities plant including steam generators, piping, instrumentation and mechanical systems.

The construction work of the project was done simultaneously with the improvement of the utilities plant. This accelerated the project progress and eased its execution as planned.
